For most of history, writing was a hard way to make a living. Very few authors ever earned one, and the ones who did rarely held the reins. Publishers controlled the editing, the printing, and the distribution. If you were an author, you handed your manuscript over and hoped, with little transparency into how it fared or why. The internet changed the shape of that story. Self-publishing, and platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing, put distribution directly into authors’ hands.
