# Writing & formatting

> Formatting, fonts, page layout, and images for every writing session.

Most of your time in Quarkle is spent right here, writing. The formatting toolbar sits at the top of your manuscript and keeps the essentials within reach.

## The toolbar, left to right

* **Bold**, **Italic**, **Strikethrough**, and **Clear formatting**
* **Heading 1** and **Heading 2**
* **Paragraph layout**: align left, center, right, justify, and decrease / increase indent
* **Page margins**: Minimal, Narrow, Comfortable, Wide, and Extra-wide (**Comfortable** is the default, and your choice is remembered)
* **Bullet list** and **numbered list**
* **Insert image**: image files up to **5 MB**; images can be dragged to resize and aligned left, center, or right
* **Font family**: Default, Inter, Arial, Georgia, or Monospace
* **Text colour**

On the toolbar's right side you'll find a live **word count**, **undo / redo**, and a **save** indicator.

## Handy shortcuts

* **⌘/Ctrl+B**: bold
* **⌘/Ctrl+I**: italic
* **Ctrl+↑ / Ctrl+↓**: jump to the previous / next occurrence of the word under your cursor

## Rewriting with AI

To rework a passage with AI, **highlight it** and pick an action from the **Highlight Bar** that appears. Quarkle previews the change as a diff and you accept it only if you like it. See [the Highlight Bar](/editor/highlight-bar) for the full set of one-click rewrites.

To write forward from the end of a chapter, press the pink quill. [Ghostwriter](/editor/ghostwriter) reads the current ending and continues it directly on the page.

<Note>
  Every keystroke is captured as you write. Learn how Quarkle checkpoints your work in [version history](/editor/version-history).
