# Quarkle Chat

> Brainstorm, ask questions, and get inline edits from an AI that has read your manuscript.

**Quarkle Chat** is a conversation with an assistant that has read your book. Use it to brainstorm the next scene, ask what a character would do, request a line edit, or work through a plot problem, all without leaving your manuscript.

Chat reads before it answers. Instead of guessing, it opens the relevant chapters and notes first. You can see what it read in the small trail of chips above each reply.

## Start chatting

Open the **Chat** tab and type in the box at the bottom.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Ask a question or give an instruction">
    For example, "what is the central tension in chapter 1?" or "help me brainstorm how Elias and Mara first met." Press **Enter** to send, **Shift+Enter** for a new line.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Watch the tool trail">
    Quarkle may read chapters, search the manuscript, or check your Story Atlas before it answers. The chips above the reply show what it did.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Keep threads focused">
    Each chat is its own thread. Start a new one with the **+** button, and reopen old ones from **Previous chats**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Keep a chat to one topic. You get sharper answers, and you can rename threads to keep different ideas apart.
</Tip>

## The Toolkit

Click **Toolkit** (or type **@**) to control, per message, what Quarkle focuses on and which tools are on.

<Frame caption="The Toolkit: pin chapters or summaries into context, and turn on tools like Suggestions, Memory Lock, and Open Expression.">

</Frame>

**Include in context**

* **Chapter content**: pin specific chapters so Quarkle focuses on them.
* **Chapter summaries**: give the big picture without pasting whole chapters.
* **Characters**: bring specific character profiles into the conversation.

**Tools**

* **Suggestions**: Quarkle proposes edits that appear as suggestion cards in your manuscript. Preview each one, then accept or reject it.
* **Memory Lock**: pause [Memory](/ai/memory) for this chat, so a wild tangent does not get saved to your Atlas.
* **Open Expression**: route to an unfiltered model for mature scenes. Pro only, and you enable Open Expression in Settings first.

<Note>
  You can also attach an image to a message, and stop a reply while it is streaming. Your draft is saved if you navigate away.
</Note>

<Tip>
  No toggle needed for margin notes: just ask, *"leave some notes on this chapter"* or *"critique this scene,"* and Quarkle comments straight into the margin instead of replying in the thread. Those notes show up in the [Review Room](/ai/review-room) tagged **Chat**, with their own on/off toggle.
</Tip>

## Choose your model (Pro)

Pro users can pick which model answers. Type **#** or open the **model** menu next to the box. **Auto** is the default and picks a good model for each turn. You can also choose a specific one.

<Frame caption="Pro users can choose from more than ten models, or leave it on Auto.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/quarkle/5WUUaYl-dgOEAFoM/images/app/chat-models.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=5WUUaYl-dgOEAFoM&q=85&s=dceaed3bf68df114fd85d89e4c80b3aa" alt="The Chat model picker showing Auto and several selectable models" width="1074" height="720" data-path="images/app/chat-models.jpg" />
</Frame>

The list changes as new models ship. See [Models & providers](/under-the-hood/models-and-providers) for what is available now and how Auto decides.

## Accepting edits

When you ask for a change, or turn on **Suggestions**, Quarkle's edits appear in your manuscript as suggestion cards. Preview the change, then accept, reject, or undo it. The AI proposes and you decide, so your voice stays on the page.

  To see exactly what Chat can read and how it decides which chapters to open, see [Inside Quarkle Chat](/under-the-hood/inside-quarkle-chat).
