# Open Expression / NSFW
> Write mature, explicit fiction with Quarkle. How to turn it on, how to get past a model that refuses, and the one line that is never crossed.
**Open Expression** lets Quarkle write mature, explicit fiction: adult sexual content, graphic violence, dark themes, and morally difficult characters. It is off by default. You turn it on yourself, once, after confirming you are an adult.
Open Expression is strictly **18+**. It is meant for adult creative writing. You must confirm you are 18 or older and accept the terms before Quarkle will write this kind of content.
Open Expression is a **Pro** feature. On the free plan it is locked. See [Plans & pricing](/account/plans).
## Overview
By default, Quarkle keeps its writing advertiser-safe: it will decline explicit sexual content and gratuitous graphic detail. Open Expression removes that guardrail for your own fiction, so you can write scenes as dark or as explicit as your story needs.
Turning it on is a one-time setup: flip a toggle in Settings, then accept a short popup that confirms your age and the terms. After that, you write and ask questions exactly as you normally would.
## Turning it on for the first time
Open **Settings**, go to **Preferences**, and switch on **Open Expression**.
The first time you turn it on, Quarkle shows a short popup: **Confirm Age and Accept Terms**. Answer both questions:
* **Are you 18 years old or above?** Choose **Yes**.
* **Do you accept our Terms of Service?** Choose **Yes**. You can read them at [quarkle.ai/terms](https://quarkle.ai/terms) first.
Then press **Submit**. If you leave either answer as No, Quarkle will not enable the feature and reminds you that you must be over 18 and accept the terms to proceed.
You only do this once. Your acceptance is saved to your account, so you will not see the popup again on your next session.
Once it is on, just write. Ask questions in [Quarkle Chat](/ai/quarkle-chat), draft a scene, or run a review, the same as always. Open Expression simply changes what Quarkle is willing to write, not how you work.
## If a model refuses
Here is the honest part: the large language models Quarkle runs on come from different providers, and many of them will decline explicit requests on their own, for their own reasons, even with Open Expression on. This is not a bug in Quarkle. It is the model deciding not to write something.
When that happens, the fix is simple: **switch to a different model and retry the same message.** Some models are far more willing than others.
Open the model picker (the model name below the chat box, or press `#`). With Open Expression on, the list filters to the models that can handle mature content, each tagged **NSFW**.
Pick a different model, then use the **Retry** button on the message that was refused (or edit the message and send it again). Our recommendation:
**Grok works very well** for Open Expression. If a scene gets refused or a model writes around what you asked for, switch to **Grok** and retry. It is the most consistent for explicit and dark content.
Leaving the model on **Auto** works too. When a request is clearly explicit, Auto routes it to a model that can handle it. Choosing a specific NSFW model yourself just gives you direct control when one model refuses.
## What is never permitted
There is one hard line, and it holds no matter what model you pick, how you phrase the request, or what the fictional framing is: **Quarkle will never write sexual content involving minors.** No toggle enables it, no prompt works around it, and no model on the platform will produce it. This is categorical and applies to every plan, Open Expression included.
Everything else in adult fiction is on the table with Open Expression: explicit sex between adults, graphic violence, crime, cruelty, and villains who hold genuinely ugly views. The single exception above is absolute.
